Good Sleep Isn't Just About How Long You Sleep


When we talk about sleep, I think there are really two big questions that matter:
Did you sleep long enough?
And:
Did you sleep well?
We can view these as the two dimensions of sleep: Duration and Quality. Most people understand the first one. If you're routinely sleeping five hours a night, there is a fairly obvious problem. The quality of sleep is more complicated as it depends on many things. Are you repeatedly waking up? Are you breathing normally? What is your sleep environment and even more tricky, what is your relationship to that environment and how does your physiology react to it? Don’t forget alcohol, medications, stress, and something we probably don't think about enough: sleep timing.
Sleep Has a Rhythm
Sleep isn't simply eight hours of unconsciousness that can be dropped anywhere into a 24-hour period with identical results. Our bodies have an internal clock. Across approximately 24 hours, an extraordinarily complex sequence of biological processes coordinates melatonin release, cortisol spikes, body temperature regulation, alertness via activating center, metabolism, autonomic activity, and sleep pressure. Those signals interact to help determine when we become sleepy, how easily we fall asleep, and how sleep unfolds once we're there. This is our circadian rhythm. And it means that timing is one of the foundations upon which good-quality sleep is built.
A recent study in emergency physicians provides an interesting illustration. Researchers compared physicians working traditional 10 PM–6 AM overnight shifts with overnight shifts ending at 4 AM. During the traditional overnight shifts, deep sleep decreased substantially. When the physicians finished earlier, deep sleep was better preserved and they reported less sleepiness.¹ There were only 12 physicians in the study. So I certainly wouldn't use this study to establish a rule that everyone needs to stop working before 4 AM. That's not what it tells us. But the direction of the finding isn't particularly surprising.
If sleep depends upon multiple biological processes unfolding in a coordinated sequence, with much of their timing organized by the circadian system and synchronized to the light-dark cycle, we should probably expect consequences when we repeatedly ask our bodies to sleep substantially outside that biological timing.
The Weekend Experiment We Perform on Ourselves
A much larger body of research points in the same general direction. A 2025 systematic review examined 59 studies of sleep regularity. Greater irregularity in sleep timing was consistently associated with worse outcomes across multiple domains, including metabolic, cardiovascular, mental-health, and cognitive outcomes.²
An earlier systematic review encompassing 41 studies and more than 92,000 people reached a similar conclusion: greater variability in sleep schedules and later sleep timing were generally associated with worse health outcomes.³
Researchers sometimes call the difference between our workday and free-day sleep schedules “social jet lag.” The name is actually pretty descriptive. Imagine waking at 6:00 AM Monday through Friday, then staying up until 1:00 or 2:00 AM Friday and Saturday and sleeping until 10:00 AM. You haven't traveled anywhere. But you've shifted your sleep-wake schedule by several hours, and Sunday night you ask your body to abruptly shift it back. It's a little like giving yourself a miniature time-zone change every weekend.
Before you jump to any rash conclusions, that doesn't mean you should set an alarm for 6 AM Saturday after sleeping only five hours!
Sleep duration still matters. In fact, research suggests that when people accumulate genuine sleep debt during the week, additional weekend sleep may provide benefit.⁴ The lesson isn't “never sleep in.” It's that routinely needing huge amounts of weekend catch-up sleep may be telling us something about the schedule we're maintaining during the rest of the week.
Give Your Body Something It Likes: Predictability

Perfect sleep schedules aren't generally realistic. There are: babies, work schedules, travel, teenagers, emergencies, vacations, and the list goes on. The goal isn't to become obsessive about bedtime creating cortisol spikes. It's simply to recognize that our biology likes rhythm. Try to organize your life in such a way as to:
-Keep your bedtime and wake time relatively consistent.
-Get outside and expose yourself to natural light early in the day.
-Let evenings actually become darker.
-Avoid routinely shifting your sleep schedule several hours simply because it's the weekend.
-And if life disrupts your schedule, move back toward your normal rhythm rather than worrying that you've somehow ruined your sleep.
When evaluating your sleep, start with the two big questions: Am I sleeping enough, and am I sleeping well? Then remember that one of the things helping determine the answer to that second question happens before you ever close your eyes. Your body has been preparing for sleep all day. Try to work with that rhythm rather than constantly fighting against it.
